4 Tips Introverts Can Improve Their Networking - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

4 Tips Introverts Can Improve Their Networking - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career One of my favorite jokes about IT professionals is How can you tell youre talking to an outgoing IT pro? Because when he talks to you, he looks at your shoes instead of his own. I have a friend who fits the computer programmer stereotype. Very shy, not very outgoing, doesnt like being in crowds, and doesnt know what to say when life finds him in one. Im sure there are a lot of you who would rather pull out your toenails with a pickup than talk to new people. The prospect of it is frightening, and many times you find yourself bailing on group situations, even though you know theyre going to be good for you. But if you want to grow your personal brand and advance in your career, youre going to have to deal with people. So here are four ways introverts can improve their networking. Realize that no one is going to think poorly of you or laugh at you Most people hate public speaking, because they have the fear that people are going to laugh at them or think poorly of them. They forget that the audience is actually pulling for them. They want the speaker to do well. Theyll forgive mistakes, errors, and slip ups â€" hell, they probably wont even notice them. Its the same thing for new people you meet. Theyre not going to be critical of you, laugh at your nervousness, or think poorly of you. They want to meet you and learn more about you. Keep telling yourself that when you meet someone, and youre well on your way. Also, remember that you should spend more of your time listening, not talking. Ask questions that get the other person to do most of the talking. That will take a lot of the pressure off yourself. Focus on meeting just one or two people, not the whole room A lot of people who go to their first networking meeting all have the same oh shit reaction when they see a roomful of people, thinking they have to meet everyone. The nice thing about networking is that you dont have to meet a bunch of people. In fact, I advise against that. Instead, you want to meet 2 3 people, and thats it. Just find someone and get to know them. When you feel comfortable, find someone else to talk to. When youre done and you think youve had all you can handle, say your good-byes and go home or back to the office. But even if you meet one, thats one more than you would have met if you stayed home. One word of caution: a networking meeting is not the place to find your next new friend. Thats going to take time, so dont spend the entire time talking to a single person. Spend about 10 minutes with them, and see if there is enough of a connection that you want to sit down with them later, over coffee or lunch. Be sure to get their business card so you can make that connection later. But dont monopolize someones time during the entire meeting. Have some questions you use over and over When I attend business networking meetings, I hear the same first question over and over: So, what do you do? Thats the reason were there, so the question is expected. But I get tired of it, so Ill ask a few of my own: What did you do before you got this job? Where did you go to school? What part of town are you from? Where did you grow up? The thing is, I ask everyone these questions. Theyre my stock questions. I have about 5 or 6 questions I ask everyone when Im stumped for something to talk about â€" frankly, I dont know how many more realtors and personal wealth advisors I can be interested in. But when I start to delve into where people are from and where they went to school, the conversation can last for several minutes, and its effortless. If we run out of things to talk about â€" this is their first job, they didnt go to college, and they grew up with wolves â€" Ill ask them things like what business book theyre reading now, what made them get into that industry, or what they like most about it. Someone will almost always come up and join you The great thing about networking meetings is that people switch conversations at the drop of a hat. Youll be talking to someone, and a third person will come up and join the conversation. Then a fourth. Pretty soon, youll end up talking to one of the new people, and your original partner is talking to the other one, and you never even noticed the switch. In fact, if you stay in one spot long enough, youll find that you had several conversations without ever moving. Your original conversation (called a dyad) will almost always change into a three person conversation (a triad), and then add a fourth (a group; not a quadrad. Sorry.) before splitting into another dyad. Then the whole process repeats itself. Ive gone to networking meetings where I stayed rooted in one spot for an hour as my conversations underwent this amoebic split over and over. And if you find yourself alone, walk up to a couple people and introduce yourself. Join their dyad. Theyll ask you what you do, youll talk about that, and the conversation will go from there, before youre joined by a fourth, and then youll split all over again. Conversation is one of the easiest things to do for the outgoing and gregarious of us, but it can be painful and frightening for the introverted of us. But its really something you need to do if you want to get to know people who can help you and you can help. If you want to grow in your personal branding and professional development, you need to master the art of networking. Its not that hard, and it wont kill you. I promise. The lazy way - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

The lazy way - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Fred Gratzon is an entrepreneur who hates hard work. In fact, I refuse to do it. Yet two of my businesses grew like Jacks beanstalk. Each made Inc. magazines list of the 500 fastest growing companies in America. One of those businesses appeared three times and was even ranked #2. His blog is excellent. Check out his run-in with jackal investment bankers or this story of financial growing pains solved by the question Does it feeeeeeeel like youre making money?. I could write a long piece on the value of laziness, but I cant be bothered right now, so Ill just point to this excellent quote by Mark Twain who says it much better anyway. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. Is The Fear Of Starting A Business Legitimate

Is The Fear Of Starting A Business Legitimate Just take a second to step back and realize what exactly, starting a business really means. Practically, you’re beginning infrastructures that will either belong to you, or paid for by you. Real physical things like a commercial office, a building, a car park for employees, the brick and mortar store, everything you work with day in and day out is yours. You’ll also be working with or hiring other businesses, such as distributors, transport logistics, trucks, cargo planes etc. Your financial future is therefore tied to what you have created. Its not like you can just do 8 hours a day and then go home. Business owners have to make their business their lifestyle. Hiring people, taking on the responsibility of following workers rights and also paying your staff on time and in full. You’re also going to be ruthlessly competing with other businesses. There is no hugging and kissing here, you’re trying to take the other business out everyday. So is the fear of starting your own bus iness legitimate? Do you want control? Perhaps the number one reason people start their own business is because they want to work for themselves not somebody else. In the beginning they very naively think that the boss is just lounging around, reaping the benefits of their hard work. So they say they’ll work for themselves so they can keep the rewards. However soon you’ll realize that being the boss is the hardest job to do in a business. You’re responsible for everything. The leader doesn’t get to have normal 8 hour shifts, they have to be constantly by their phone ready to handle any problem. But if you do want more control over your financial and professional life, then starting a business really is a responsibility you must be ready to take on. Don’t think of the money you’ll make, ask yourself whether or not you’re ready to be held accountable for other people? A lack of knowledge The lack of knowledge to begin a business is also right up there in the top reasons why people don’t start their own business. Well, listening to people who were just like you but did make that first leap is incredibly helpful. Learning from their mistakes so you don’t have to, increases your knowledge without any risk at all. For example on this business podcast, they speak to regular people who have become entrepreneurs and small business owners. Unlike other podcasts that just care about the big names, this is a type of podcast where up and coming business owners talk about their personal experiences. Everything from people management, industry cultures, legal pitfalls and budget building blocks is discussed.   Being a name Sometimes people just don’t want their name hitched to a business because they are in fear their public reputation might be diminished should they fail. However, you don’t need to make it public knowledge of who owns the business, you can create a name and identity that is nothing like your own. People do have legitimate fears of starting a business, but the modern day tools at your disposal make taking on the responsibility much easier than ever before.

Pack one along with a healthy snack and you’ll be good to go. Healthy Chicken Wraps Strawberry Chicken Bacon and Spinach Wrap: Bacon makes everything better, but so does the fresh strawberries and crisp spinach piled on top of grilled chicken. Drizzle with poppyseed dressing and bacon is no longer the star of this show. (via Creme de la Crumb) Mediterranean Chicken Tender Wrap: It’s not often that a Mediterranean meal features chicken tenders, but the couscous, feta, tomatoes, fresh mint and parsley give it an authentic flavor. (via EatingWell) Kale Caesar Salad with Chicken Wrap: After whipping up your own Caesar dressing, pile your salad into a Lavash flatbread â€" and save the other half for tomorrow’s lunch. (via Heather Christo) Mexican Chicken Quinoa Salad Wrap: This Mexican-style wrap is filled with flavor, texture, protein and fresh ingredients. Mix up the black beans, corn, tomatoes, chicken, quinoa and greens in advance to make it an easy to prepare meal. Just pile high and top with fresh avocado and you’re good to go. (via Spices in My DNA) Thai Chicken Salad Wrap With Blueberries: Here’s an unexpected combination: chicken, edamame seeds and blueberries. This wrap proves opposites attract and taste pretty darn good together. (via Spoonful of Flavor) Mango Chicken Lettuce Wrap: Whipping up your own pan of mango chicken is probably good enough for a meal, but why not spoon it into a lettuce wrap and make one delicious lunch? (via Britnell) Grilled Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken Wrap: Time to fire up the grill (or the stove) for these bad boys. The sweetness of the pineapple pairs perfectly with the tangy sauce. Top it off with lettuce, tomato, red onion or nothing at all. Its good either way. (via Creme de la Crumb) Cobb Salad Wrap: Between the chicken, bacon, egg, bleu cheese and avocado, this wrap won’t leave you hungry. (via Anna Monette Roberts, POPSUGAR Food) Sonoma Chicken Salad Wrap: You don’t need mayo to make this classic chicken salad. Instead, whisk together plain yogurt and apple cider vinegar to make a tangy dressing. (via Angela Simpson) California Chicken Club Wrap: Cali got it right on this combination of shredded chicken, bacon, tomato and avocado. This recipe takes it to another level with fresh mango and a squeeze of lime juice for extra flavor. (via Taste and Tell) Buffalo Chicken Wrap: Buffalo chicken wings aren’t known to be super healthy, but this recipe makes them much more diet-friendly. Use baked chicken for an even healthier option. (via Sugar Dish Me) Asian Chicken Wrap: With a sauce that features both peanut butter and sriracha, this wrap is equal parts savory and spicy. (via Well Plated) Chicken, Spinach and Cream Cheese Tortilla Wrap: Spinach and cream cheese make a savory combination. Add some chicken to that and you’ve got a full-on, filling meal. (via Tried and Tasty) Healthy Turkey Wraps Buffalo Turkey Lettuce Wrap: Healthy eating is easy with these flavor-packed buffalo wraps. Even better than gameday wings, they’re loaded up with ground turkey, onion, carrot and celery mixed with none other than Frank’s Hot Sauce. Drizzle on your blue cheese or ranch or opt for blue cheese crumbles â€" make it as spicy and cheesy as you want. (via The Girl Who Ate Everything) Turkey Cranberry Almond Wrap: Just like Thanksgiving in a wrap, turkey and cranberry are a match made in Heaven when paired alongside almonds and a bit of celery. (via Tastes Better from Scratch) Asian Turkey Lettuce Wraps: Trade the lunch meat for ground turkey seasoned to perfection for a warm and flavorful lettuce wrap. You won’t even miss the take-out. (via Eat Yourself Skinny) Turkey Wrap with Apples and Brie: This warm wrap is so delicious you’ll think you’re in a gourmet café. The quick and yummy combination of apples, brie cheese and turkey is divine. (via Skinny Mom) Apple Cheddar Turkey Wrap: Turkey meets apple and cheese again, only this time with cheddar. Wrap it up with a handful of fresh lettuce and a drizzle of the honey-vinegar sauce for a tasty and balanced lunch. (via Emily Bites) Turkey Taco Lettuce Wrap: Taco Tuesday just got even better. Load ‘em up however you want with all your favorite toppings. Pica de gallo, avocado and a sprinkle of cilantro sound heavenly to me. (via Cooking Classy) Turkey and Cucumber Lettuce Wraps: This wrap has the makings of a healthy salad but is easier to eat and even better tasting thanks to the hummus and sprinkle of paprika. (via Just a Pinch) Thai Turkey Brown Rice Lettuce Wraps: Mix your favorite Thai flavors together in a healthy lettuce wrap and top with fresh cilantro, carrots and crunchy peanuts to tie together the lime, ginger, soy and red chili garlic sauce that makes this wrap a favorite. (via A Cedar Spoon) Turkey Bacon Ranch Wrap: We think we’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t love a bacon and ranch combination. The turkey’s just an added bonus. (via Like Mother Like Daughter) Turkey  Meatball Lettuce Wrap: Meatballs may be soft, but everything else in this wrap â€"  carrots and crisp lettuce leaves â€"  give it a nice, wrap-worthy crunch. (via Delish) Hearty Winter Turkey Wrap: This recipe is described as uncomplicated and interesting, which is enough to get our attention. We’ll stick around for the roast-turkey-and-pear combo. (via Sarah Lipoff, YumSugar) Spinach, Roasted Red Pepper and Feta Wrap: You can’t go wrong when you put pesto, feta cheese and roasted red peppers together. The protein punch from the turkey almost comes in second to the other fillings’ flavors. (via Neighbor Food) Creamy Avocado Turkey Wrap: Something seriously simple can taste seriously good: for example, Greek yogurt, avocado and garlic combine to make the tasty dressing for this turkey-based wrap. (via Alida’s Kitchen) Viva Fiesta Turkey Wrap: The creator of this wrap suggests spreading a very light layer of cream cheese between the wrap and your ingredients so the bread isn’t soggy by lunchtime. If you can hold off that long to start this fiesta. (via Lone Star Nutrition) Turkey Reuben Wrap: This healthy version of a classic sandwich features lean turkey instead of corned beef. I’m not sure why we didn’t make the switch earlier. (via Delish) Healthy Protein Wraps with Meat Easy BLTA Wrap: Avocado makes anything better, including the classic B.L.T. sandwich. But even better than that? A light wrap instead of bread to let the flavors shine through. (via Yummy Healthy Easy) Low-Carb Sriracha Beef Lettuce Wraps: Your lettuce will never know what hit it when you fill it with tasty lean ground beef mixed in a sriracha and citrus sauce. Garnish with green onion and cilantro for a wrap you’ll never forget. (via Kalyn’s Kitchen) Steak and Guacamole Wrap: Shiitake mushrooms are the perfect complement to a lean, seasoned steak wrap topped with fresh guac. Yogurt subs the sour cream to make this even lighter. (via Jamie Oliver) Broccoli Salad Wrap: Dress your bacon slices with broccoli slaw, apple slices, pecan pieces and dried cranberries. A drizzle of poppyseed dressing tops it all off. (via Poet in the Pantry) Tandoori Steak Wrap: It’s not every day you combine steak and grapefruit â€" in fact, we can presume you haven’t tried the combination before. Once you taste this Indian-inspired wrap, though, you’ll probably wonder why it’s taken you this long. (via Aarti Sequeira) Southwest Ham Wrap: It’s not every day ham gets the Southwestern spice treatment, but this wrap proves it should probably happen more often. (via Budget Savvy Diva) Philly Cheese Steak Wrap: When it comes to iconic sandwiches, the Philly Cheesesteak is up there. This wrap is a lighter version of the typically indulgent meal that still packs all the flavor. (via Maebells) Bahn Mi Lettuce Wrap: This lengthy recipe might be daunting to look at, but the actual prep isn’t so bad. You can leave the vegetables to pickle while you brown the pork, for example. (via Cooking For Keeps) Healthy Seafood Wraps Mexican Chopped Tuna Salad Wrap: I’m convinced you can add “Mexican” to anything and it automatically sounds better. This is no exception. Tuna is mixed with all the typical Mexican ingredients â€" bell pepper, black beans, corn, tomatoes, cilantro and avocado â€" for an easy and tasty tuna salad that’s good with or without the wrap. (via Kim’s Cravings) Spicy Garlic Shrimp Wrap: The spicy garlic shrimp are seasoned with caramelized onions, chipotle peppers in adobo, garlic and salt. In case your mouth wasn’t already watering, it’s then topped with red onion, tomato, cucumber, lettuce and tzatziki sauce take it over the edge and right into a tasty flatbread wrap. (via Unrefined RD) Spicy Tuna Wrap: It’s pretty much a giant spicy tuna roll, except easier to make and eat and without the seaweed. My sushi addiction just got easier to beat. (via Goodie Godmother) Shrimp Lettuce Wraps with Peanut Dipping Sauce: Who needs spring rolls when you can fill lettuce with shrimp, avocado, cucumber, carrot and cilantro? Add in some mint and Thai basil for the full effect. (via Natasha’s Kitchen) Tuna Salad Wrap: Tuna salad has never sounded so good. Mix plain Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, walnuts, raisins, and seasonings into fresh or canned tuna and wrap with a handful of spinach leaves. (via The Healthy Foodie) Salmon Salad Wrap: After grilling salmon, turn your leftovers into a tasty, Greek yogurt-based salad to fill your wrap. (via eHow) Curried Shrimp Lettuce Wrap: A crisp, green lettuce leaf holds it all and makes this recipe low-carb. You won’t even notice the bread’s missing when you bite into the sautéed shrimp sweetened by yogurt sauce. (via Eating Well) Spicy Salmon and Pineapple Wrap: Here’s another way to repurpose last night’s grilled salmon filet: Stuff it into a wrap with grilled pineapple, Greek yogurt and tomato. (via The Brewer and the Baker) Salmon Hummus Wrap: Only four ingredients are required to make this wrap. In fact, its creator said she hesitated in sharing the recipe because it’s so simple, but decided it was too good to keep to herself. (via Hungry Hobby) Tuna Nicoise Lettuce Wrap: Believe it or not, a butter or iceberg lettuce leaf is strong enough to hold it all: fingerling potatoes, green beans, cherry tomatoes and, of course, fish. You can also substitute salmon for tuna if you wish. (via Cat Cora for Shape) Spicy Shrimp and Avocado Lettuce Wrap: 21-Day Fix Approved, fresh romaine lettuce is topped with a crunchy layer of tangy, slightly sweet honey, lime and cilantro slaw, blackened shrimp and fresh cilantro and jalapenos (optional). YUM. (via The Garlic Diaries) Healthy Vegetarian Wraps and Vegan Wraps Avocado Caprese Wrap: These could easily become a go-to lunch. The avocado and fresh mozzarella fill you up and the tomato, basil and balsamic vinegar deliver a punch of flavor. (via Foodie Crush) Spinach Avocado Egg Wrap: Eggs aren’t just for breakfast, although this wrap is so good it may replace your avocado toast. Make your hardboiled eggs ahead of time to prep or fill it with scrambled eggs and add tomatoes if you’d prefer. The world is your wrap. (via Today’s Frugal Mom) Hummus Collard Wrap:  You cant go wrong with this easy and tasty combination of hummus and veggies wrapped up in collard leaves. (via Eating Bird Food) Mint Grilled Sweet Potatoes With Tahini Cauliflower Rice Wrap: The name is a doozy, but wait until you get a mouthful. These flavors will fill you from your head to your toes. (via Food Faith Fitness) Grilled Zucchini Hummus Wrap: Grilled zucchini is paired with hummus, spinach, red onion, fresh tomatoes and cheese for a hearty wrap that will warm and fill your belly. (via Maebells) Tangy Veggie Wrap: The recipe calls for carrots, bell pepper, bean sprouts, red onion and spinach as the main ingredients but this tangy dressing would go on any of your favorite veggies. (via Hurry the Food Up) Roasted Veggie Wrap with Bean Spread: This wrap is as versatile as it is filling. Use your favorite veggies and top with a garlicky bean spread that you can customize to your tastes with herbs or lemon juice. (via The Garden Grazer) Southwestern Veggie Hummus Wrap: Black Bean hummus is the star of this wrap, although the fresh chopped peppers, tomatoes, corn and avocado give it a run for it’s flavor. (via Chelsea’s Messy Apron) Vegetable Chard Wrap: Matchstick-sliced veggies pile nicely into a chard-leaf wrap, which you can then dip right into a tangy lime-ginger sauce. Handheld salad? Yes, please. (via POPSUGAR) Creamy Avocado and White Bean Wrap: Mashed white beans and avocado make the perfect hearty base for this wrap. A sprinkle of white cheddar â€" and chipotles in adobo sauce â€" give it a punch. (via EatingWell) Chickpea Salad Wrap: Sometimes, vegans and vegetarians miss meat. That’s where this recipe comes from: an innovative vegan chef who once loved to eat tuna salad for lunch. Her loss is your gain. (via Oh She Glows) Old Bay Summer Tempeh Wrap: The classic spices in this recipe will make your tempeh taste all-American. (via Food Fitness Fresh Air) California Bean Burger Collard Wrap: You could eat your favorite bean burger in a bun … or you could unwrap a collard leaf, slather some hummus, slice in some avocado and put your burger on top of that. (via Eating Bird Food) Avocado Egg Salad Wrap: The Pioneer Woman serves her egg salad on rye, but you can just as easily spoon it into a wrap and take it to work. (via Pioneer Woman) Baked Falafel Lettuce Wrap: A falafel-filled pita is one of life’s greatest indulgences. This baked version makes it less of an indulgence and more of a weekday lunchtime possibility. (via MyFitnessPal) Guacamole Wrap: Finally, this protein-packed wrap gets all of its good stuff from a unique guacamole recipe, which incorporates avocados and green peas.
