Demographic Data is Critical for Media

Demographic Data is Critical for MediaDemographic Data is Critical for MediaDemographic data sounds like a term that would only come up in a meeting of market research experts. But if you work in media, you need to know the basics of demographics to enaya your media product whether its a TV newscast, radio show, magazine or website reaches the people you want. Simply put, demographic data information is used in media marketing to classify an audience by age, gender, race and other categories. In media, as in all business, demographics are used to pinpoint potential audience growth and to spot under-performance. Heres a sure sign of a media rookie You ask him who he wants to reach with his TV program, and he says, Everybody. True, its called broadcasting, but if you try to hit too broad of an audience, you likely end up reaching nobody. Examples of Products That Reach Different Demographics Cosmopolitan, Womans Day and Better Homes Gardens are magazines that reach the female de mographic. But beyond that, they target different types of women. You wouldnt think twice about seeing a racy subject advertised on the titelseite of Cosmopolitan. Thats because it aims to reach a younger, hipper worldly woman than its rivals. The publishers of Cosmo know theyre talking to a much different audience that the women who read Better Homes Gardens, which would never put a sexy headline on its cover. Finding Your Most Desired Demos A TV station or network tracks its success using Nielsen ratings. These ratings reports not only show the overall household numbers, but they also break down the results by various demographic categories. In television, most producers would like to reach people ages 18-34, 18-49 or 25-54. The reason is those are the groups most coveted by TV advertisers. Sure, the TV networks want to create a hit show. But they also want to be able to sell commercials within the program. Thats why you see many prime time TV programs that feature people in these age groups in the starring roles. Yes, there may be a grandmother in the show, but not as the star. How Products Are Tweaked to Reach Key Demos A TV news director knows there is an infinite number of stories he could pursue. But when it comes time to make choices, demographics often play a role. Sure, a station will cover the murder of a senior man who isnt in the target demographic groups. But when its time to decide whether to do a special report on social security or public schools, the schools usually win out. Thats because parents of young children fall into that 18-34, 18-49, 25-54 age range. If the station does decide to do a story on social security, it could present it as what younger adults can do to make sure their aging parents have the money they need to live. Taking that perspective helps the subject appeal to younger viewers. Changing Your Product to Hit the Audience You Want Media companies constantly modify their products and the way they are advertise d to hit a certain demographic group. The publisher of a womens magazine who follows demographic trends may decide her audience is becoming too old to attract the top advertisers. So she will focus on putting younger people on the cover and writing articles for a younger female customer to change the magazines demographic makeup. In the magazine world, general interest publications that were designed to appeal to people of all ages and both genders sometimes struggle by trying to attract such a broad audience. Life and Look magazines are two examples. Readers enjoy magazines that seem tailored just for them. When youre launching your media product or evaluating a product thats been around for years, use demographic data as a yardstick for growth. If you only appeal to people ages 65, the sad fact is, as they pass away, so does your customer base unless you are constantly seeking younger people who will grow to use your product even if they arent ready for it today.

Ageism and the Social Media Job Search

Ageism and the Social Media Job SearchAgeism and the Social Media Job SearchDo those years of experience count for or against you?Im 59 years old with a full-time job in medical ultrasound imaging. I have 32 years of experience in the field. With hospital downsizing and Medicare cutbacks, the higher-paid employees costing the most will be looked at. Your book Job Searching With Social Media For Dummies is very helpful and I want to follow your suggestions. I have two questions. Should I state my true years of experience, or would that make recruiters shy away because of age? Would my LinkedIn profile indicate to my present employer that Im unhappy in my current position?Thank you for your time,Ultrasound BobDear Ultrasound Bob,Good for you for seeing the writing on the wall. leid everyone has the guts to acknowledge the fact that their job is not going to last forever. When I was at Cisco in 2008, living in Las Vegas, even though I knew my job would go away, I didnt do anything about it. So first, I want to applaud you and give you the chance to celebrate your own courage. Many people I talk to have concerns about their age and years of experience, old and young. It used to be that more years of experience was a great thing to have. These days, experience can often mean being on a list of the first to go during layoffs. For recruiters, age can have many different subtexts - though by law, that shouldnt be.I think there is nothing wrong with downplaying those years of experience. They are simply not the asset they once were. In fact, youve beaten the national average for the length of a career by 6.4 times The U.S. Department of Labor reports that the average time in a position is 2 years at a company, 4 years and in a career for about 5 years. In the course of your single career, most Americans would have had 6.4 different careers. Why not just say you have over 15 years of experience? On your resume and LinkedIn work history, just go back 15 years. In your summ ary, there is no reason to specify the exact number of years of experience you have, and 15 years is long by todays standards. But its not so long as to indicate that you would require a significantly higher salary than someone else. You do not have to put every single job youve ever had on your resume. In your second question, you worry that by simply having a presence on LinkedIn, you might communicate that you are looking for work. Generally speaking, this isnt how people see LinkedIn. Indeed, there are many users of LinkedIn who are very happy with their current jobs. However, this perception may be different at your current job. I would do a quick search to see if other people at your current employer have profiles. If they do, then its probably OK for you to have one, too. If not, then maybe you should be careful. One additional piece of advice If you do end up setting up a LinkedIn profile and begin to build a large network (which you should), be koranvers to reset the privacy s etting that broadcasts every single change you make to your profile. If an employer sees a sudden flurry of profile changes, this might lead them to conclude that you are looking for another job.

The death of expertise Why a few generalists will rule the future of work

The death of expertise Why a few generalists will rule the future of workThe death of expertise Why a few generalists will rule the future of workOn 11 March 1811, a destructive movement emerged in Nottinghamshire and spread rapidly throughout the north of England. This movement welches led by a group of disgruntled textile workers, who had spent the majority of their lives specializing in weaving and feared that the rising popularity of automated textile equipment would replace their jobs and livelihoods.Up until that day, the skilled workers had lived by the ethos of the time the more you specialize, the better your financial security.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBut this security blanket was unexpectedly yanked off the majority of skilled textile workers, who suddenly found themselves unemployed and unable to make ends meet, because they could no longer compete with the new machines.Driven by rage and a sense of betrayal, the workers gathered together and vowed to destroy the textile machines that stole their jobs. They called themselves The Luddites, named after Ned Ludd, a fictional robin hood type of character who destroyed textile machines.Late at night, the Luddites would rendezvous to practice drills and maneuvers, and by day they would smash and burn looms, stocking frames and factory machinery. As the Luddites rapidly grew in popularity across the country, wealthy factory owners recruited over 14,000 soldiers to retaliate with gun violence.Eventually the British Government passed the Frame Breaking Act of 1812, which made the destruction of mechanised looms punishable by death. Shortly afterwards, several dozen Luddites were charged with crimes, put to death by hanging and shipped off to other countries. And just like that, in one fell swoop, the anti-technology movement led by skilled, middle-class textile workers, fell by the wayside. The Luddi tes quickly became a thing of the past, and the world would move on to deploy the use of more advanced technology in the workplace. For over 200 years, the deepest fears of the Luddites never came to pass.Specialists and white-collar workers with deep expertise continued to dominate their field of work and reap the majority of financial rewards, whilst machines worked happily alongside them. That is, until now.The rebirth of the polymathI never teach my pupilsI only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.- Albert EinsteinIn his famous 1953 essay,The Hedgehog and the Fox, philosopher Isaiah Berlin divides thinkers into two categories, by drawing reference from the Ancient Greek poet Archilochus who noted that The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.Berlin explains that whilst hedgehogs relate everything to a single, central vision, foxes pursue many ends connectedif at all, only in some de facto way.For many centuries, hedgehogs have been hel d in high esteem in society, as those who have clocked in their 10,000 hours to achieve mastery in a chosen field. Meanwhile, foxes have been cast aside as Jack of all trades, master of none, unfocused and lacking in direction. But there was a time in history when foxes were bred and celebrated by society. It was called the Renaissance period, a cultural movement that spanned from the 14th to the 17th century. In 1432, an Italian fox wrote a letter to commission work from the Duke of Milan, and listed his achievements in a wide range of disciplines including sculpting, architecture, science and mathematics. The letter did not include his talents in painting, sculpting, music, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography.Suffice to say that the fox got the job, and the letter would later become known as the Curriculum Vitae or CV of today. That fox was the epitome of a generalist, or formally a polymath his name was Leonardo da Vinci.Leonardo single- handedly pioneered several unrelated fields, invented the parachute, an armored fighting vehicle, a calculator, an improved version of the helicopter, not least his famous paintings such as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.Yet it is ironic that despite inventing the CV, a young Leonardo da Vinci would struggle to land a well-paid job in todays specialist workplace. In a similar fashion, his contemporary polymaths including the likes of Galileo, Leibniz, Michelangelo, Shakespeare and Copernicus, would have wasted their talents and been forced to specialize in the modern education system. After the renaissance period, the polymath became somewhat of an endangered species. A thing of the past. But over the last few decades we have witnessed the rebirth of the polymath as a leading public figure Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, and most notably, Elon Musk. All signs point in the direction of an unprecedented period in human history, that will give birth to a new breed of polymaths who s urpass those of the renaissance period.Heres why.The fourth Industrial Revolution has arrivedA robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.? Isaac AsimovAccording to a 2017 Mckinsey report, between 400 million and 800 million jobs globally could be automated by machines by 2030. Meanwhile, another report published by the University of Oxford, noted that a conservative estimate of 47 percent of total US employment is at risk of automation. The mass human cleansing is already underway driverless cars and trucks, artificially intelligent radiologists, surgeons, chess players, lawyers and accountants.A quick examination of the drastic differences in the number of employees amongst the worlds largest firms of 1962 versus those of today, should have platzset off the siren. In 1962, ATT had market cap of $20 billion and 564,000 employees, whilst General Motors had a market cap of $12 billion and 605,000 employees.2Conversely, in 2017, Apple had a market cap o f $800 billion and only 116,000 employees, whilst Google had a market cap of $679 billion and only 73,992 employees.3What makes todays digital revolution so different from the others? After all, humans have collectively survived and prospered throughout the three major industrial revolutions since the 18th century. The difference is subtle but dramatic machines are beginning to learn and think for themselves in quantum leaps.Any doubt that a machine could potentially out-think, outperform and outmaneuver a human, was thrown out the window when the google algorithm beat the worldwide champion of the ancient game of Go- a strategy game that is much more complex than chess.So-called traditional skilled white-collar jobs that were once deemed as a safety net for graduates, are now ironically the most at risk of being automated. And old school coveted skills like leadership, management, social influence and time management, have been forcefully overtaken by critical thinking and creativity skills.According to a world economic forum survey of leading global employers, the top five most in demand skills by 2022 will beAnalytical thinking and innovation.Active learning and learning strategies.Creativity, originality and initiative.Technology entwurf and programming.Critical thinking and analysis. The most coveted job roles of the future look nothing like those of the past, incorporating ansicht in demand skills Innovation managers, Data scientists, Software and Applications Developers and E-commerce and Social Media managers.By 2022, it is estimated that no less than 54% of all employees across the globe will require significant re-and upskilling, as single-skillset job roles rapidly decline. And those who continue to pursue specialization with zest run the risk of becoming extinct, much sooner than they think. As automation continues to wipe out repetitive tasks once occupied by skilled workers, entry and middle-level jobs will become scarce, specialists will compete fier cely with one another for lower wages, and eventually, economically viable jobs will only reside at the senior level.Meanwhile, organizations that fail to innovate and adapt quickly will die a fast and painful death.Recent history is littered with the graveyards of so called too big to fail corporations that fell off the wall Kodak, Blockbusters, HMV, Hummer, Toys R Us, and most recently, Walmart is in the biggest fight of its 68-year history against Amazons disruptive innovation.Bullish Investors and entrepreneurs are already jostling to win the AI gold rush and dethrone the old guard firms. Venture capitalist Investment into AI start-ups has increased sixfold since 2000.In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, the line of communication between Millennials in the workforce and Baby boomers who lead corporations, has completely broken down- a deloitte survey of workers across 36 countries, discovered that 43% of Millennials plan to quit their job within the next two years, while only 28% of Millennials would be willing to stay beyond five years.5In a frantic effort to calm the storm, organizations have resorted to the gig economy, whilst policymakers battle with one another over a universal basic income to cushion the impending job crisis. It would appear that all hope is lost. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. As more disruptive technologies penetrate the workforce in rapid succession and skills gaps widen even greater, those who survive and prosper will be agile lifelong learners.Their expertise will not be deep like their forefathers, instead it will resemble that of a polymath- a wide knowledge base across unrelated domains. They will hold the keys to innovation because as studies have found, the best ideas emerge from combining insights from fields that dont seem connected. There is no one better poised to do so than a generalist.6And as the Pareto principle kicks into high gear, there will be a radical shift in the balance of power that mankind h as never witnessed before. For the first time in history, the generalist will rule the specialist. The fox has overtaken the hedgehogIntelligence is the ability to adapt to change.? Stephen HawkingThe truth is, not all fairy tales have a happy ending. And it would appear that perhaps we have reached the end of the romantic fairy-tale that of a specialist and a machine working together in harmony. The breakneck speed of technological improvements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, are beginning to shake the very foundation of the nature of work.Traditional career paths and the educational institutions that feed them, are no longer the bedrock of job security as they have been for centuries. And old guard firms and leaders that continue to stubbornly hold onto the notion that weve always done it this way, will vanish as quickly as fallen autumn leaves swept away by a sudden gust of wind. The Luddites raised the alarm over 200 years ago. They warned us that a day would come wh en the specialist would become endangered.Perhaps its time we pay close attention and heed their warning.Today, many hedgehogs freely roam the hills and rule over the few foxes. Tomorrow, only a few foxes will rule the many hedgehogs. The era of the specialist has come to an end. How to Stand Out During a Job Interview

How to Stand Out During a Job InterviewHow to Stand Out During a Job InterviewHelpful tips on how to stand out from other candidates during a job bewerbungsgesprch.Youve gotten the interview- thats half the battle. Now, its time to ace the interview and get an offer. That might be a little more difficult. With the job market today, there could be dozens of others that are vying for the same job as you. Because of this acing the interview is crucial, but not enough. You need to find new ways to stand out from the rest of the interviewees, and do something that makes the interviewer remember you from the sea of faces.Start out strong.First impressions are often the most memorable. Besides the interviewer, make sure to be polite to all the staff that you encounter, including front desk attendants. When you finally do meet your interviewer, greet them with a firm handshake and eye contact. If youre asked how you are or how your day is doing, answer in a clear and succinct manner. You can even memorize some different answers to the simple question of How are you?Do your research. Some of the most successful candidates are those that make sure to research the company and the specific position theyre applying for before the interview. Most companies have a website full of information specifically talking about their business and their mission. If you know who your interviewer will be beforehand, it doesnt hurt to do some research on them as well. Do they have a blog where they talk about business? Do you they have a LinkedIn or other social media profiles? You should take a short amount of time to peruse through whats available.Talk about improvement.Be prepared to talk about where you see yourself specifically in the company. In this case, talk about how you believe you would excel in the company atmosphere, and ideas you have for improving yourself and the company. Be very careful not to criticize current practices of the company- instead, talk about ways that the c ompany could become more efficient or ideas for improving customer relations.Stay in interview mode. From the moment you pull into the company parking lot to the moment you leave that parking lot, you should be in interview mode. You have no idea who is watching and aware of your actions. As mentioned earlier, you should be polite and courteous to all employees, even if they arent directly involved in the hiring process. Even after the interview, it is possible that your behavior is being monitored to see your reactions. Dont lose a potential job offer by making a simple mistake.Ask your own questions. Many times during an interview, the interviewer will ask if you have any questions. This is your time to shine. Interviewers want to see that youre interested and willing to learn more about the company and the position. This also gives you more control of the direction the interview is going. Some good questions to ask are What are the main challenges of this position? What are you loo king for in the idea candidate? What does a typical day at company look like?Follow up afterwards.Even after you leave the interview, your work isnt over. Its time to let the interviewer know that you are still interested in the position, and are thankful for the time they spent interviewing you. Sending over a personal thank you note can be a great way to gain more respect from the interviewer, as well as the added benefit of keeping your name fresh in their mind. Make sure to reference specific parts or conversations from the interview- avoid being generic.

20 Tips to be Camera Ready in your Business Video

20 Tips to be Camera Ready in your Business Video20 Tips to be Camera Ready in your Business Video20 Tips to be Camera Ready in your Business Video Qualman, author of Digital Leader 5 Simple Keys to Success and Influence (McGraw Hill, 2012)With the modern realm ofvideo marketing, new avenues such as YouTube are being utilized to help companies and individuals get on a path to success and reach their planned goals.Whether your marketing tactics are for a product or service, promoting a personal or professional endeavor, or simply sharing an event with friends, at some point you will be filmed and uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, or national television.Whatever the situation, the below tips will help you becamera readyin your business videoto put your best face forward1. Relax your face, starting with the rest of your body. Make sure your hands arent balled up and your shoulders arent scrunched. Some people find it helpful to give a little self-massage to the temples and neck. Rub bing your palms together to generate warmth and placing them onto your closed eyes is another trick that works.2. When you smile, specifically concentrate on raising your cheek-bones. Raising your cheekbones will naturally give the illusion to the camera that your eyes are sparkling.3. Focus on yoga-esque breaths that are deep and slow. This breathing technique will help relax your face and body and will also help prevent you from talking too fast.4. When being interviewed, remember it is different than a muster conversation. Dont use non-verbal cues like nodding your head as it will appear like you are a know it all and are impatient for the question. It also conveys to the audience that you already know the answer.5. When possible, use a good microphone they are worth the extra money.6. Make sure the light is in your face and not behind you. Natural light is best at dawn and dusk.7. Have good posture. Stand up against a wall and have your shoulders and the top of the back of your head pressed firmly against it. Then slowly walk away from the wall keeping this posture intact for the camera.8. Overemphasize everything, including your words, excitement, volume, gestures, and eyes. Dont shout like you are scolding a misbehaving dog (see 2 about being relaxed), but you need to project like you are on stage performing a play.9. Be concise. If you are filming your own video, make it less than two minutes. Better still, see if the video can be under a minute. If you are being interviewed, answer the question with your most powerful statement first and try to do so in one or two quick bullet points.10. If you are wearing a suit jacket, tuck the tails of your coat under your behind and place your sitting bones firmly on them. This position will give a nice line on your shoulders and help avoid wrinkles.11. If offered hi-definition (HD) make-up, accept it. If you dont use it, you might look tired, shiny, and old on HD. If you are at home, apply base make-up with a bru sh to dramatically reduce shine and lines.12. Make sure to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids before-hand. Have water nearby in case you need it. Avoid ice and sugary drinks. Sparkling water with lemon is the best.13. The camera is your audience so spend the majority of the time looking into it. If you are on Skype/FaceTime dont watch your little reputation in the corner. If you are being interviewed ask the interviewer where you should place most of your eye contact.14. Before you begin speaking, a good trick to set your natural voice is to hum happy birthday then immediately say, The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.15.Wear comfortable clothes and what you feel you look the best in. If you are comfortable then you will be confident.16. If you feel like you have a frog in your throat, eat some cantaloupe. This fruit acts as a natural lubricant and helps clear congestion.17. Make sure you are yourself on camera. This can be difficult. Some speaking coaches say not to us e your hands, but when I pay close attention to Jim Collins (Author of From Good to Great and one of the best speakers in the world), he definitely does. The difference with him is that every movement he makes has a purpose, so the use of his hands assist his message rather than detract from it.18. Use the tips mentioned here when filming others. Make them a star and they will shine brightly on you19. Have Fun 20. Do post mortems. The beautiful thing about video is you can review. Act like you are the head coach of the New England Patriots and review video to get an advantage. How many ums do you say, are you slouching, do you look better with your glasses on or off, do you say like or other pet words too often? Some of the best speakers you can learn from kleine Zander, Dan Heath, Jim Collins, Seth Godin, Tim Sanders, Guy Kawasaki, Andy Stanley.FromDigital Leaderby Erik Qualman, reprinted with permission from McGraw-Hill Professional. How to Prepare for Different Types of Interviews

How to Prepare for Different Types of bewerbungsgesprchsHow to Prepare for Different Types of InterviewsInterviewing is often just as stressful for the einstellungsgesprcher as it is for the job seeker. If you understand the different types of interviews, including why and when theyre successful, you can make your interviews mora comfortable for both parties. When you conduct an interview, be sure that you dont come across as unprepared, short on time, hurried, distracted, or unskilled at interviewing. Its your job to ask the appropriate questions to determine if a candidate can perform successfully in the position. Screening Interviews Interviews ding into two categories the screening interview and the hiring or selection interview. Screening interviews qualify a candidate before he meets with a hiring manager for possible selection and serve to weed out candidates. Theyre usually quick, efficient and low-cost strategies that result in a short list of qualified candidates. The h iring or selection interview can take on many different forms. A third-party recruiter or someone from the Human Resources department usually conducts screening interviews. These experienced and professional interviewers are skilled at interviewing and screening candidates. They should be effective at judging character and intelligence and determining if the candidate is a good fit for the company culture. They also should be good at identifying profil red flags or problem areas in the candidates work background and general qualifications. Some interview questions relate to ethics. Examples of screening interviews include the telephone interview, the computer interview, and the video conference interview. Telephone Interviews The telephone interview is the most common way to perform an initial screening. This helps the interviewer and the candidate get a general sense if they are mutually interested in pursuing a discussion beyond the first interview. Telephone interviews also save time and money. The interviews may be tape-recorded for the review of other interviewers. During a phone interview, the candidates goal is to arrange a face-to-face meeting. Computer Interviews The computer interview involves answering a series of multiple-choice questions for a potential job interview or simply submitting a resume. Some of these interviews are done through the telephone or by accessing a website. Candidates might be asked to push appropriate buttons on a telephone to answer questions, or they might undertake the interviewonline. Video Interviews More than half of the largest U.S. companies already utilize online video conferencing as an alternative to the more costly face-to-face meetings. Its continual drop in cost is making it a popular resource for businesses as well as for home use. Hiring Interviews One-on-One Interviews This is the traditional interview where candidates meet with employers in person, one-on-one. Both the candidate and employer usually wal k away from this interview with a sense of whether or not the fit is right. Serial interviews Serial interviewsoccur when candidates are passed from one interviewer to another throughout the course of a day. No decision is made untilthe final interviewhas taken place and all the interviewers have had a chance to discuss each others interview. Since candidates have only one chance to make the right first impression, they should be energized and ready for the next interview. Sequential Interviews Ina sequential interview, the candidate meets with one or more interviewers on a one-on-one basis over the course of several days, weeks, or even months. Each interview is intended to move a candidate progressively towards learning more details about the position, the company, and hopefully, a job offer. Panel Interviews In apanel interview, the candidate appears before a committee or panel of interviewers. Candidates are evaluated oninterpersonal skills, qualifications, and their ability to think on their feet. This type of interview can be intimidating for a candidate. Ina panel interview, the candidate should makeeye contactand communicate individually with each member of the group or panel. Group Interviews In agroup interview, a company interviews a group of candidates for the same position at the same time. As a result, the company gets a sense of a candidates leadership potential, style, and persuasive skills. This type of interview can be overwhelming for a candidate, who needs to understand the dynamics the interviewer establishes and determine the rules of the game. He must avoid overt power conflicts, as they make the candidate look uncooperative and immature. The interviewee needs to treat other candidates with respect while exerting influence over them. Simultaneously, he needs to keep his eyes on the interviewer so he doesnt miss important cues. Situation or Performance Interview Insituation or wertmiger zuwachs interviews, candidates may be asked to role- play one of the job functions to assessspecific skills. After being given a specific, hypothetical situation or problem, theyre asked how theyd handle it or to describe a potential solution. This can be difficult if the interviewer fails to provide enough information for the candidate to recommend a solution or a course of action. This type of interview is often used to select candidates for acustomer service representative positionin a department or discount store. Audition Interview Audition interviewswork well for positions in which companies want to see a candidate in action before they make a hiring decision. Interviewers may take the candidate through a simulation or brief exercise to evaluate the candidates skills. This allows a candidate to demonstrate his abilities in interactive ways familiar to the candidate. This type of interview works well forcomputer programmers, trainers, welders, and mechanics. Stress Interview Astress interviewis generally intended to put the candi date under stress and assess her reactions under pressure or in difficult situations. A candidate may be held in the waiting room for an hour before the interviewer greets her. The candidate may face long silences or cold stares. The interviewer may openly challenge the interviewees beliefs or judgment. The candidate may also be asked to perform an impossible task on the fly, such as convincing the interviewer to exchange shoes with the candidate. Insults, rudeness, and miscommunication are very common. All of this is supposed to be designed to see whether or not the candidate has what it takes to withstand thecompany culture, the companys clients, or any other possible stress. Behavioral Interview Many companies are increasingly using thebehavioral interview. Depending on the responsibilities of the position and the working conditions, a candidate may be asked to describe a situation that requires problem-solving skills, adaptability, leadership, conflict resolution, multi-tasking, initiative orstress management. The interviewer wants to know how the candidate handles these types of situations to indicate future performance. There are several types ofbehavioral interviews Structured interview with layered questions Skilled interviewers commonly use this, asking a series of behavioral questions and non-behavioral questions. The questions often overlap and are designed to gather information about each of the major employer concerns.Informal interview This type is casual and relaxed. It is intended to get the candidate talking and too friendly. The candidate may reveal more information than he might otherwise. Too much information, too soon, can eliminate him.Assessment instruments/testingVarious types of tests are used to determine if a candidate is a good fit for the company.Personality inventoriesassesspersonality types.Aptitude inventoriesassess aptitudes in certain skill areas.Interest inventoriesassess interests in various occupational categories. Combinati on instruments can be a combination of any of these. Combination interviewThis type of interview combines two or more types of the above interviews. This could occur within the same interview, on subsequent interviews, or both. Directive or Structured Style Interview In adirective orstructured interview, the interviewer has a clearagendaand follows it unflinchingly. Companies use this rigid format to ensure parity between interviews. Interviewers ask each candidate the same series of questions so they can compare the results. Tag-Team Interview Thetag-kollektiv interviewis often attractive to companies that rely heavily on team cooperation. A candidate may be expecting to meet one-on-one with an interviewer, but find himself in a room with several other people. Employers want to gain the insights of various people when interviewing candidates. They want to know if a candidates skills balance the needs of the company and whether the candidate can get along with other workers. Candida tes should use this opportunity to gain as much information about the company as they can. Each interviewer has a different function in the company with a unique perspective about the business. Meandering Style Interview Themeandering style interviewis, unfortunately, often used by inexperienced interviewers. The interviewer relies on the candidate to lead the discussion. The interviewer might begin with a statement such as, Tell me about yourself. Candidates can use this to their advantage. This type of interview style allows a candidate to guide the interview in the way that best serves the candidate. But a candidate must remember to remain respectful of the interviewer and not dominate the interview. Mealtime Interviews Themealtime interviewis used to determine what a candidate is like in a social setting. But interviewing over a meal can be a candidates worst nightmare or challenge. The interviewers want to not only know how you handle a abspaltung but how you treat your host, a ny guests, and the serving staff. A candidate must take cues from the interviewer and always remembershe isthe guest. The applicant should sit after her host, display proper etiquette, and thank the host for his time. Follow-up Interviews Companies bring candidates back for second and sometimes third or fourthfollow-up interviews. Sometimes they just want to confirm youre their ideal candidate. Sometimes theyre having a difficult time deciding among a short list of candidates. Other times, other decision-makers in the company want to gain a sense of who the candidate is before ahiring decisionis made. Additional interviews may go in a variety of directions. When meeting with the same interviewer, a candidate can focus on cementing rapport, understanding where the company is going and how his skills mesh with the companyvisionand their culture. Candidates may find themselves negotiating a compensation package, or they may end up starting from the beginning with a new interviewer. Informational Interview Theinformational interviewis underutilized by job seekers. Job seekers secure informational meetings to seek the advice of someone in their current or desired field. They also want to gain further references to other people who can advise them. Since employers like to stay on top of a list of available talent, even when they dont have any job openings, theyre often open to these types of interviews. The job seeker and employer exchange information and get to know each other better without reference to a job opening. Conclusion Interviews are time-consuming, and training is needed to do them well. They are a flexible method for assessing and selecting candidates for all levels and types of positions. By generating insights, they enable the interviewer to judge whethera candidate is a good fit for the company. However, information from different interviews can be potentially difficult to manage. For example It can be hard to orchestrate these insights toge ther effectively so they provide a clear picture of the candidate. The insights assembled can be open to potential interviewer bias.Interviewers may miss certain areas of knowledge, skills, and ability. An interviewer may stress one area and neglect others.Since interviewers observations are subjective, they can be inaccurate. It is imperative that companies find interviewing styles and formats beneficial to the needs of both the company and its potential employees. If they can accomplish that goal, they can build bench strength and place the right people in the right positions. How to Get the Most Out of Your Internship

How to Get the Most Out of Your InternshipHow to Get the Most Out of Your InternshipFor many college students and recent graduates, an internship is a near-requirement for future full-time employment. Without an internship, even entry-level positions are out of reach. So it can be easy to fall into the mentality that an internship is merely a stepping-stone on the path to a real job- something to endure, not enjoy. But internships can offers all sorts of benefits beyond post-college employment. Sometimes, an internship can expose that a planned career path or industry is not, in fact, the best one for you. Internships can help you build a network of colleagues- and friends- who may last a lifetime, offering countless opportunities (both career-focused and personal). And, internships can help make you comfortable and confident in the office environment. You wont get all those benefits if youre just showing up and counting down the days until your internship is over, though Heres how t o maximize your internship experience, and keep the focus on your whole career- and not just an initial job placement. Seek Opportunities to Gain Company and Industry Knowledge During your internship, try to learn about a range of things. If youre interning with the marketing department, seek out employees on the editorial team, or the programming department, and try to learn how their work differs from your own. Aim to learn about the company as a whole- How is it organized? Whats the company culture? Which employees are considered stars? What makes a good worker?- as well as the overall industry. Keep your future in mind Would you want to work at a company like the one youre interning, or would you prefer a different management or organizational structure? During interviews, youll get questions about how you like to work, and what environments suit you. The knowledge gained during your internship helps inform your response. You may discover during your internship that the comp any or industry is not for you. Dont look at the internship as wasted time if thats the case- its far preferable to discover which paths arent for you early on in your career. Become Confident in Workplace Practices If youve always been in school and worked part-time jobs in retail or food services, an internship may be your first exposure to office culture. Its different. The more youre exposed to how offices function, from the pre-meeting small talk to knowing who to CC on emails (and when), the more comfortable it will feel once your training wheels are off, and you have a staff position. And, keep in mind that knowing industry-focused jargon is hugely helpful when it comes to decoding job postings, writing effective cover letters, and sounding like a knowledgeable pro during interviews. (Heres what all those buzzwords using in job postings actually mean.) So keep track of the tools used in the office and the buzzwords that come up during meetings. Broaden Your Skills and Track What You Do During your internship, maybe youll write your first newsletter or computer program, create a schedule, or run a project (if youre lucky). But some internship programs reserve tedious grunt work for interns. Rest assured, no matter what work you do, you are gaining knowledge and skills that are different than the ones learned in the classroom. Even simple tasks- reaching out to staffers for the information to include in a daily email, say- can mucksmuschenstill look powerful on your resume. To that end, keep track of everything you learn and do during your internship. It may be helpful to keep a journal. Or, just have a draft email, and note in it every time you do a new task with the date. For instance, 11/9, learned new Excel formula 11/22 attended conference and presented key points in staff-wide meeting. Later, when youre writing up a description for your resume, these notes will be invaluable. Finally, remember that the purpose of the internship isnt just for you to do work to help the company- its for you to learn. To that end, take notes during meetings, and if something is unclear, ask questions to clarify later. If colleagues mention interesting, relevant news stories, resources, or tips, follow up and learn more. All of this research and follow-through will make you a better, more informed candidate during interviews. Ask for Feedback As an intern, youve practically got newbie in your title. That may be frustrating, and sometimes limit you from more exciting projects, but it also means that youre expected to not know everything. So feel free to ask questions, always. You can also ask for feedback from managers and colleagues. Find out what you can be doing better. While its hard to hear negative feedback, knowing your weak points can help you improve. Better to find out now, then during a full-time job where poor performance may mean youd lose the job. (Plus, youll have something to say when interviewers ask, Whats your biggest weakness?) Finally, know that if theres any time in your career that a mistake isnt a huge problem, its now. Ideally, of course, you wont make mistakes, but if you do, just acknowledge the error in a forthright way, and ask your manager what you can do to fix the situation. Give It Your All The best internships offer challenging, interesting work. But sadly, thats not always the case. Here are a few things to keep in mind if youre struggling to stay engaged You can ask for more Volunteer for additional work and projects if youve completed your assigned tasks. Or, better still, generate a list of helpful projects or tasks, and ask your manager if its OK to move forward with them.Be assertive Meet with your manager early on, if possible, to try to get a sense of expectations. Remember, this internship is a two-way street If you know youre interested in meeting with certain people or achieving certain resume-worthy tasks, mention it your manager- part of a managers job is to ensur e you have a meaningful experience. (Do be aware, however, that people in the office are generally over-worked, not under. So be respectful about how much time you take up.) Dont look bored Depending on your responsibilities, this may be a challenge. No matter how tedious the work may be, dont let that show on your face or in your attitude. Dont check your phone during meetings (unless thats part of your job responsibilities) or social media at your desk. Form Connections- And Maybe Even Find a berater If youre part of a group of interns, know that you might form relationships that will last a lifetime. So do socialize with your peers (but not at the cost of your work- use lunch time and coffee breaks for conversations, not cubicle-time). Go beyond the interns for your social circle, too. Ask co-workers to coffee, or try to sit with co-workers at lunch. Attend work-wide social events, and mingle. (Warning If theres booze served, even if you are of age, partake sparingly. Being t he intoxicated intern at a work event is not a good look.) Finally, be on the lookout for mentors, who can give you advice, write recommendations, and help you make important connections. (Here are some ideas for how to find career mentors.) If you have a co-worker who is helpful answering questions about on-the-job tasks or works with your regularly, ask how they got to where they are, what advice theyd give you, and so on. Having these kinds of conversations is the start to a mentor-type relationship, which can be a powerful force throughout your career.
